Couples Counselling

Relationships can be challenging and even the closest relationships have their ups and downs.

When your relationship it is not going well you can feel lonely, rejected, upset, angry, stuck and out of ideas on how to make changes as a couple.  Couples counselling, sometimes referred to as relationship therapy, may be helpful.

This form of counselling differs from individual therapy because the sole focus of the work is on the relationship. I provide an impartial and confidential space to explore your relationship issues, clarify what is going on and what is getting in the way of you having a happy and fulfilled relationship.

Couples counselling can help you to gain an understanding of your behavioural patterns, the causes of lack of fulfilment and help you to communicate better.

We are not taught how to communicate with our intimate partners and it’s no wonder that couples, as hard as they may try, often continue repeating the same unhelpful patterns causing increased frustration and disappointment.

First Appointment

This session will include and assessment. We will explore what is getting in the way of you feeling satisfied with your relationship. You will also experience what it is like to work with me and to see if I am a good fit for you. All couples counselling appointments are 60 minutes.

Individual Appointment

After the initial appointment I will meet with you each individually for one session to get to know you better. Understanding your background, upbringing and relationship history can help provide a more complete picture of what is happening in the relationship.

Subsequent Couples Counselling Appointments

Counselling sessions will focus on the relationship and your relationship goals. Communication will always be an important part of the work and I will help you to start developing healthier communication patterns and techniques to express your needs and concerns more constructively.

Depending on your goals for your relationship we may explore:

  • conflict resolution
  • trust issues
  • intimacy issues
  • life transitions: becoming a parent or an empty nester, relocating, adjusting to new careers and retirement, all which can put strain on a relationship.

It’s important to be clear that at the heart of couples counselling it is you the couple who do the hard work.
